R/C Airplanes
  • Anybody fly r/c airplanes? I have had several, broke most of them =(

I just built one and am tweaking it so it's controllable. I almost ran myself over today when I was test flying it.

    Hello World!
  • I actually have one... In a box :p Got it for one of my birthdays but I don't really play with it but after I saw your plane... I do want :) Probably tomorrow. Hopefully I won't break it before the taking off :)
  • that's sweet. just making one, thats awesome. i don't or ever have owned one.
  • I have always wanted to, but never gotten around to actually doing it.

Did you make that plane from scratch, or a kit? It doesn't look like there's a motor, so do you just throw it and hope for the best?
  • I had plans for the body from a PDF file. The rest I put together. There is a motor where it randomly gaps. I just didn't have the propeller on it at the time.

It's beat up a bit now. It wasn't flying to good, then I made some adjustments. 1. I made the ailerons/elevators (they are mixed as 1) span the entire side of the wing. 2. I moved the battery to the right side instead of the middle. All the other radio equipment is on the left side, and even though the electronics are very light, it made a huge difference. The good thing is, I made it out of foam, so hot glue works great to put it back together. Or, make a new plane using more foam.

Edit: Oh yeah. That picture is before I really beat it up. I moved the battery to far forward for a bit more control.
    Hello World!
  • Here is another one I am building and will hopefully have it up this weekend.

    Hello World!
  • That looks great!! I had an R/C plane once, but I have since crashed it and never gotten another one. Would love to get back into it!
You said foam, what exactly is it? and how aero-dynamic are they? not to say anything bad, but they look like big paper airplanes.
how long does it take to put one together?
  • The most recent pics. . I put a bigger prop on and it screwed it up (and chopped one of the servo wires somehow).. Spent like 3-4 hours and rebuilt it and testing sometime today.

Anyways, it's 6mm thick depron foam. At places like Walmart you can buy those foam boards, i tried it and wasn't a fan. Here are a couple different types of foam: http://www.rcfoam.com/cart.php?target=category&category_id=75

As for aero-dynamic, they do ok. The last picture wasn't glued yet on the nose. It did fly amazing though. With the right combination of electric motor, prop, and battery you could probably push a big foam block through the air. The cool thing about these "foamies" as they are called, your cuts don't have to be perfect. While I try to get pieces to match up 100% it's damn near impossible so as long as I get it close it will fly.

Edit: Also, a coworker is suppose to come over sometime soon to mess with them. I will get some video recorded of them fllying.

    Hello World!
  • Haha, I wish.
  • I'm working with a friend (who makes the most ridiculous RC planes, like, VTOL, ground effect, annular wing-d, some of which have even flown :D) to make a plane with a 7MP still and 1080p video camera, both mounted on a PTZ gimble with a wireless preview camera. It's gonna be sweet, will post pics.
  • Oh nice! I have a 640x480 that's coming. It was suppose to be here today, but the shipper used USPS instead of UPS *sigh*

I could see a vertical take off not being to hard, but to do a decent landing I imagine would take some skill and a little bit of luck for a plane.

You might like this ArduPilot. At some point I might try it.

Maiden flights are always great, even if they don't fly.
    Hello World!
  • @kreitje You mentioned earlier that you made the RC plane from a plan in a PDF. Do you still have those PDFs, or a link to where you found them?
  • I got them from RCPowers.com. However, most of their plans you have to pay for, but they have a few free ones.

X31 - Free - This is the plane from the first 3 pictures I posted.

Extra 300 - This is from them too, however I can't find the link I so I uploaded it.
    Hello World!
  • Where did you get your engine/radio equipment or can you just post the model that you bought? I really want to try and make one of these but when searching for radio equipment they are all WAY bigger than what you have. I am really interested in trying to make one of these for fun.
  • Radio/Receiver: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=SPM6600
    Motor/ESC/Battery/Prop Kit: http://www.graysonhobby.com/catalog/microjet-intermediate-power-combo-p-934.html

The radio is really nice and you can buy additional receivers for it. The radio can hold up to 10 models (meaning 10 receivers, or 10 setups with the same receiver or mix and match).

Note: Different parts come with different connectors (batteries, esc, etc). I am a fan of the bullet connectors ( I think 3.5mm are the common ones). (bullet connectors: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EFLA241 )
    Hello World!
  • Jeese! That radio is no cheap buy! I guess I'll hold off for a little bit, until i got my money all squared away.
  • Yeah, it was an investment. Upfront it cost a bit of money, however buying parts keeps me from buying new planes when the crash and burn. In the long run I will have saved money.
    Hello World!
  • That is true. Someday when I have a nice enough bank account where a few hundred dollars isn't TOO much, I will purchase myself the components and fly a badass plane around :D
  • Ha.. I'm in the middle of building a cool stealth fighter, however I had to go away so it will be quite some time before I can finish it.
    Hello World!
  • Took this shot today.

    Hello World!
  • Sweet! What kind of camera do you have on it?
  • This small aerial cam.

    http://www.graysonhobby.com/catalog/aerial-p-922.html?

I have it attached with velcro.

It doesn't take great video. But for $60 you get some decent pictures out of it.
