Favorite iPad Apps
  • Howdy all, I thought I'd list a few of my favorite iPad apps, and see if y'all had any to recommend.

AirVideo: I absolutely love this app. I have a huge collection of movies and television shows on my desktop (in various formats), and this app lets me stream them to my iPad. It works both over my local network and over the internet. If the video isn't in an iPad-compatible format, it converts it on the fly.

iSSH: I'm one of those folks who pretty much live on the command line, so I was very pleased to find a decent SSH app for the iPad. iSSH can maintain multiple connections at once, and since my iPad is jailbroken I can leave it running in the background. I also have my iPad running an SSH server, so I can login to localhost and use iSSH like a terminal.

GoodReader: I've tried a number of ebook readers on the iPad, and this was my favorite. It supports PDF, plaintext, and images, and provides a filesystem-like way to organize them. It can copy files to it via iTunes, or load them via wifi, or download them from the web / google docs / dropbox / and many more.

iTeleport: Not a whole lot to say about this, think VNC without worrying about forwarding ports, remembering addresses, etc. It came in handy when I was out of town last weekend and needed some files I'd left on a computer at home.

Geared HD: A fun little game where you have to arrange gears in order to get them all turning. Great if you like puzzle games.

Air Hockey: Pretty much self explanatory. You play air hockey against the computer, or two player on the same device. There's an ad-supported free version.
  • I don't have an iPad but I have a question. Is the keyboard actually decent to type on? I had an SSH app when I had an iPhone and have one on the phone I have now, however it is uncomfortable to type on. So with a device the size of an iPad is it still cramped to type at a decent pace?
    Hello World!
  • I've never spent much time time with the iPhone keyboard, but I find it surprisingly easy to type on the iPad. In landscape mode the keyboard is almost as large as the one on my netbook, and I can type two-handed. It's not quite touch typing, but it's a lot better than hunt'n'peck or all thumbs.
