.xxx
  • It looks like the .xxx top level domain is getting approved.

To me, I see it more of a good thing than a bad. Will it be easier to find adult sites, probably. However, if you tag the entire tld in a filter you will have blocked a significant amount of sites. Hopefully the .com/.net/etc adult sites will drop their tld and move over to .xxx. I don't expect it to happen but I hope it does.

    Thoughts?
    Hello World!
  • I agree, it would be nice if most of the porn sites would move to .xxx. I really don't think they will though; I'd guess some of the bigger ones would purchase the .xxx equivalent of their .com and just us it as a redirect. They, like most commercial websites, have built their brand around their domain. Think what would happen if you created a .buy TLD and tried to convince Amazon, Newegg, etc to move away from their .com.

I do wish Python.com could be convinced to go to .xxx though; several times I've gone there when meaning to go to Python.org -- once in front of my boss.
  • Yeah. I am not sure if I would want to pick up a site after it was used by the porn industry. At least right away while results are in search engine indexes. Would be kind of funny though, searching for something like that only to come across the new most badass graphics card out.

@your python comment. Whoops! Hopefully your boss laughed it off. I think at some point there was a site that played off the white house's domain like that.
    Hello World!
  • Biggest sites will definitely use the new .xxx version of their .com domain as a redirection but all new websites will probably use .xxx as the main domain, I believe. It's good because sooner or later most porn will be found on .xxx websites which makes them easier to filter.

BTW. I think there will be a law that porn MUST be hosted with .xxx domain (someone will fight for that, probably some family organisations).
  • @Vento "BTW. I think there will be a law that porn MUST be hosted with .xxx domain (someone will fight for that, probably some family organisations)."

From the Sitepoint podcast, i guess right now it's all volunteer based. I could see someone trying to bring a lawsuit about forcing adult sites to use .xxx. That would be an interesting one to enforce if possible at all. However, once we start regulating the internet, the regulations will continue to go and thereby destroy it.
    Hello World!
  • @kreitje Amen!

That's all I really have to say...
  • I don't think you'd see much resistance to such a law if the world waits long enough and no country blocks all such websites. Once everyone moves to the new tld as their primary one (and I think that will happen), nobody would actually lose because of the law.
