The Community
  • OK. We absolutely need to discuss, immediately, how to progress to the next step with this community. We need structure. We need content. We need to move forward.

I am absolutely guilty of forgetting that we were trying to build a new community. I think we are all a little guilty of that.

I only ask one thing of this thread: No fighting about how we are going to talk about this. We are doing it in a thread, right here, right now. No debate on that fact.

Now, before anymore can be said, it's someone else's turn to talk.
  • I very much agree. My biggest issue is coming up with content worth discussing.

I think if we were to pull in stories from outside sources and discuss them it would increase activity. I am not talking of auto adding an rss feed, but say I find something interesting on inc/techcrunch/digg/etc and post it for our own non flame bait/youtube style discussion, it will help provide activity, and possibly spark new conversations on similar but different topics.

Agreed to an extent. But what makes us different from a Slashdot, say?

I think everyone is for discussion, it isn't clear what we want to discuss. The no-Q&A based forum ideology seems to be agreed upon.

PS: I've written a short email to the mailing list, hope all those who arrived here later will eventually get to this thread.
  • Agreed to an extent. But what makes us different from a Slashdot, say?
I think what kreitje is saying is that we could generate initial content and debate using that format, and once a general community of regular visitors has been established, we can move away from that format. I agree with this also.
  • HTML tags don't work with the new WYSIWYG editor.

Ah. In that case, I agree. We need to do more than just that, but certainly a good idea.
  • Content is definately the issue, that is, not having any.

I can support pulling in stories for internal disucssion but feel that is just one angle of the situation - if someone would like to do that then there is nothing at all stopping them, and if it is somewhat geeky we can guarantee at least a reply or two. I don't think we need to ask, or state, that this is an actual plan, it should be pretty natural IMO. Good that it was brought up though.

Next, what ideas do I have? Hmm, I don't imagine a specific protocol for posting other than if it is on your mind then go for it, you'll either spark conversation or not. It troubles me that it seems to be agreed this is a non-Q&A medium. If people aren't asking then there ain't no telling.

I have numerous 'chat' or 'discussion' programs installed directly on my machine, as most probably have, with uses ranging from smalltalk to business discussions, they're interactive and have chat logs associated so I don't lose important conversation parts which nobody else would really want to see, mostly - to my point, I don't see the use of a forum primarily as a discussion board particularly useful to anybody these days if the content doesn't 'answer' anything, and is essentially just a log of dribble.

This is the information age; you ask, you recieve - being just a drop in the ocean is reality, being a meaningless drop in the ocean is saddening.
  • That's an interesting way of looking at it.
  • I share @Grant 's opinion (paragraph 4) on what the content of this forum should be.
  • I would totally agree with Grant's and kreitje's opinions.

Posting geeky news would definitely increase the activity but, again, it must be natural. It can't be forced.

I might be missing something but as I understand, we're , aiming at people whose hobby is programming. Not the total beginners. Am I right?

I wonder if you just want to discuss or maybe even make some open-source project? Well, we're a community and this is also an option. Although most communities build up on projects and not vice versa...
  • @Jakelstr - You explained it much better than I did. The idea is not to add a post from a tech site and the only "content" added by the original poster is "What do you think". It's to go in depth and have a real discussion.
    Hello World!
  • A few points to make ...
    • Site isn't iPhone/Android friendly - especially this WYSIWYG editor
    • I like that our categories are compact, unlike YC. I'd suggest that a big part of the internet these days is mobile devices - Should we perhaps have that as our focal point to differentiate a little from YC? I recently got an Android phone and it's been a rough ride learning to code for it. Resources on the internet are many, but quality is very poor. Is this the same for iPhone? Palm? Blackberry? etc
    • Glad to see an active discussion again, I was losing hope :)

  • Shall we (for a while) disable the WYSIWYG editor? It seems to break on PMs, comments on status messages, and (@Tesiox says) on iPhone/Android.
  • OK, so if we disable this WYSIWYG, should we add any other plugin instead? Maybe a simpler one? Just like in most other forums (adding [b], [i] and etc)? BTW. Do we want to keep vanilla unchanged and use plugins only or are we going to modify vanilla it self? I think it might be required to add one or other function...
  • I'm for Markdown. It should be hard to get it to work. IIRC, it's just a line or two of PHP code to get the raw text to be markdown parsed when it needs to be displayed (rather than stored in the db).
  • But again, I've got a question... Are we going to modify Vanilla code or use plugins only?
  • Shall we continue the editor discussion on a new thread? (I've disabled it for now)
  • I've been thinking of the whole discussion based forum idea. I've begun to be less resistant to Q&A for a couple of reasons. @Grant's comment was what me start to think of it.

I feel that even if, whether to start off with or otherwise, we have question and answers here (along with other discussions) our questions and answers will probably be different than at SO or similar websites. I recently became an SO member to see what exactly happens there. I certainly wouldn't want to hang around there a lot. For while now, I've mainly asked any questions I've had at places that specifically meant for that purpose - #python on FreeNode for Python questions, etc. I've found that at #python you can have an interesting and educative discussion, unlike at SO where there is a mad rush to answer questions (5 minutes is often too long) just to earn reputation points. Most questions are on boring things like syntax, not about how to code, etc. I don't see us (as people who truly enjoy coding and don't do it simply for the sake of money) enjoying that sort of a discussion. It's unlikely that we'll be left squabbling over whether "return x if y else z" is 'pythonic' or not.

From what I remember of YC, we were a more friendly group possibly because we were younger and discussed things that weren't strictly got to do with programming itself - "hey I want to do this, does it sound like a good idea?". That isn't kind of discussion you would have on an objective, answer-oriented website.

Even if we have questions answered here, we will do it differently. People won't be in a maddening hurry to answer questions. What started off as a question could very well turn into an interesting discussion (e.g Singletons and the Borg pattern). Q&A needn't imply being answer-oriented.

As long as we have activity here, the answer to "who are we" will continuously evolve.
  • Gents,

It looks like the vanilla 2.0.3 is now stable and "the" download. I plan on updating this coming week when I am on leave from work.
    Hello World!
  • Let us know when it's ready :)
  • Sounds good, hopefully nothing breaks!
  • If you haven't noticed, the upgrade has happened. The main issue I had was I ran into some troubles getting banned from the server (multiple ftp sessions I guess?).
    Hello World!
  • For some reason I had to clear the cache in chrome on my computer to be able to login, but on another computer chrome had no problems...

Also, it looks like signatures didn't carry over, not like it's a real problem.
  • Yeah, I noticed that too. The stuff on the right column are all plugins so if we don't like them we can turn them off.
    Hello World!
  • Looks good.
  • For some reason I had to clear the cache in chrome on my computer to be able to login, but on another computer chrome had no problems...

That didn't work for me. I had to remove all cookies (maybe one of them would be enough but... I just removed them all. If I had the same problem again, I will try to figure out which one is the cause of the problem).
  • Yes, i did that.
    Delete any Sigcont.com cookies.
  • Anyone else getting duplicate "foobar commented on your bookmarked discussion notifications?"
  • Yes. It's annoying. They are slightly different, but they are certainly doubled.
  • @kreitje, do you know why this might be happening?
  • Not yet, however I have bookmarked 2 discussions so I start receiving the emails.

Edit: Hey guys. I see a similar bug on their git issues page. Though from the looks of it, it is for the next update.
    Hello World!
  • Great, so we should either backport the fix or update when they release.

(I almost don't want to post this comment)
  • Sorry, I haven't ignored your post. You guys are getting 2 similar but different emails right?
    Hello World!
  • Yes. For example:

kreitje commented on your bookmarked discussion.

  • Sorry, I haven't ignored your post.
Huh? It never looked like you ignored any post.
  • I think he meant cause there was a day break in his response as to why it might be happening. :p
  • Yeah, I was away.. Those are the 2 that I get... I took a quick glance a few days ago and didn't see anything, but I look some more.

Edit: I may have found the culprit.

    For reference:
Line 383 of vanilla/models/class.commentmodel.php was changed
Line 119 of dashboard/models/class.activitymodel.php was commented out.
    Hello World!
  • Great! Now we can actually say something without having everyone else getting duplicate notifications. :)
  • Good deal! I noticed I only got the 1 email now as well.
    Hello World!
  • Upgrading vanilla to the latest and greatest shortly.
    Hello World!
  • Upgrade complete. Noticing some odd things in the dashboard.

**Update**- Fixed some bugs. It looks like Transmit decided not to upload some queued files. Login/Register and the admin.css (the missing files) are now uploaded and working.
    Hello World!
  • I plan on upgrading to 2.0.18 once it comes out of beta. We are currently at 2.0.16. Come September/October time frame updates will probably start being completed quicker.
    Hello World!
  • Modified the .htaccess file to tell the browser not cache php files. Hopefully this will help identifying new posts.

VanillForums still has 2.0.18 in beta. - Not Upgraded Yet
    Hello World!
  • I saw some odd things happening so I upgraded to 2.0.17. I am still waiting for .18 to be promoted from beta.
<?php echo 'Testing Geshi Plugin'; ?>
    Hello World!
  • .18 came out. I am upgrading tonight.
    Hello World!
  • and it's done....
