Just spotted on Gizmodo that they've got their hands on the 4th-gen iPhone which was supposedly lost in a bar somewhere. Quite a few sources online are saying that it's proven to be legitimate, although I can't help thinking the design isn't very Apple-like.
I do, however, think the design is a massive improvement :P
I actually hate that design. The other design (3G) is much more along the lines of Apple-like. Hopefully this is a really early prototype without the right casing. It does say XXGB on the back, probably showing its just an arbitrary casing. We can only hope!
Apparently this one is coming to Verizon though, and the iPhone is 10x better than my LG Dare.
@tLunder: I'd like to know how you think the 3G is much more Apple-like? From my perspective, the design here seems much closer to Apple's contemporary designs like the MacBook Pros, iMacs, and the iPad.
Edit: to clarify given my post above, I still don't think this looks like a final Apple product, just that the fundamental design is more contemporary Apple than the 3G(S) is.
That's what I thought at first, but then Gruber said "It is my understanding that Apple considers this unit stolen", and, well, while he could well be wrong, I'm going to say that it's more likely that his sources are genuine than that my idle speculation hits the mark.
@Mike, I don't know, I feel it too closely resembles a PSP. Maybe if it was more rounded on the edges or something. I actually really like the design now that I look at it.
In my opinion things like this are intentional. It builds hype, not only because there is a new device, but also "was it real, I have to know?" which generates more buzz about this new product, meaning more people might see the article and get excited for it.
I really like the new design, but I'm not in the market for a new phone at the moment. When my current Nokia Supernova 7210 dies, I will get an iPhone I think.
I totally agree with kreitje, I think that Apple employees are smart enough to know that doing something as stupid as leaving a prototype around leads to immediate dismissal. I certainly wouldn't be willing to risk a job at apple for some press coverage, unless working at apple is as bad as it's portrayed sometimes.
