So the first public release of Diaspora happened today, anybody give it a shot?
I got it running on an Ubuntu 10.04 VM, and I have to admit that I'm pretty impressed. That's certainly not to say that there aren't flaws or bugs, but it actually works (for the most part).
Check it out if you're interested. The Diaspora team has step-by-step instructions on installing for Ubuntu and OS X. http://github.com/diaspora/diaspora
So, what do you all think? Can something like Diaspora come up out of 'nowhere' and be a serious competitor to the likes of facebook? I think that it has a chance. Perhaps we could get it running here on sigcont.com, but I don't exactly remember the hosting situation.
I hope it will gain some traction. I doubt it will ever be a serious competitor. I read somewhere that Mark Zuckerburg donated to the project which is a bit interesting. I won't be able to try it out for some time. Let me know.
It will ever "catch on," most people don't even know what "HTTP" is and therefore have no chance of setting this up themselves, and even when there gets to be a 1-click host setup like wordpress or blogspot, people will still go to facebook because that's where all their friends are.
yeah, It's a lot simpler to use someone's else host rather than setting up your own. Internet browser is something that is pre-installed on every machine and so you can access your Facebook, Twitter, Myspace account on any computer you get access to.
Although this project is more like an experiment, as I understand. It might be possible that the idea is going to be used for some other purposes.
I will point out that there are already some hosts set up, including some hosted by Diaspora itself. Check out tom/washington/jefferson.joindiaspora.com.
