SkyDiving
  • I went skydiving today. It was one of the coolest things I have ever done. I got some video I might upload to youtube. The crazy part was climbing out onto a little platform of the plane. For some reason I thought it wouldn't be any trouble even though we are flying. As a person who doesn't like heights, or amusement park rides, I was a little nervous but it turned out to be really fun.

    Anybody try this out?
    Hello World!
  • Despite my intense dislike of rides, rollercoasters, and the like, I really want to go skydiving or bungee-jumping. Those just sound like a lot more fun to me...
  • I am the same way. Although it doesn't seem like it, it's much different than a rollercoaster or other ride. Bungee jumping is a maybe for me.
    Hello World!
  • Heh, I'm the exact opposite -- I love roller coasters and similar rides, but I'd be scared to death if I were skydiving or bungee jumping. But I hate heights anyway.
  • You hate heights and love roller coasters?!?
  • Is there a backup plan incase your parachute doesn't open? (serious question)
  • They didn't talk of one. However, "in the movies" they have the secondary parachute. Not sure if we had one though....
    Hello World!
  • I'm pretty sure that there is always a smaller backup 'chute in the bag-thing.

And it would seem so! (From Wikipedia, Parachuting article)
If a skydiver experiences a malfunction of their main parachute which they cannot correct, they pull a "cut-away" handle on the front right-hand side of their harness (on the chest) which will release the main canopy from the harness/container. Once free from the malfunctioning main canopy, the reserve canopy can be activated manually by pulling a second handle on the front left harness. Some containers are fitted with a connecting line from the main to reserve parachutes – known as a reserve static line (RSL) – which pulls opens the reserve container faster than a manual release could. Whichever method is used, a spring loaded pilotchute then extracts the reserve parachute from the upper half of the container.
  • "Not sure if we had one though...."

It's brave of you to have made the jump.
  • @Umang Yeah, though I guess it's not so much heights I hate, as not having anything between me and the ground. I strongly dislike flying, but roller coasters don't bother me. I can stand on the edge of a tall building or cliff and I'm just fine.
  • Ha ha, it's exactly the opposite with me. Even if there is a railing, I can get pretty freaked. I avoid most roller coasters (the ones here are probably not even scary by most people's standards). The thought of skydiving doesn't scare me much though, and I'll probably try at some point of time. I guess it isn't so scary because I know I'll be "falling safely". In buildings/roller coasters/etc the risk of falling is scary because there if you fall, you're a spectator (in what I'd imagine would be a terrible accident, to put it mildly).
  • I don't like falling, heights are OK then. I guess that kinda rules out both roller coasters (I've tried, they're...OK) *and* sky diving...

Hmm, what else could I do...
